The name tycom would more often be associated with cutting-edge technology projects rather than cutting grass and planting flowerbeds but our sponsorship of a recent local initiative in Aberdeen’s west end is coming up roses!

tycom, in association with neighbours Malmaison and Aberdeen City Council, have helped in a scheme to renovate Royal Court with aims to improve the general appearance of the area and bring the planting up to a level befitting of its location in the city’s prestigious Queen’s Road. The area’s green space has been tidied and flower beds have been designed to use a variety of plants in a display that will give interest and pleasure to the eye all year round.

A second aim of the initiative was to provide a project that would allow young apprentice horticulturists to gain some valuable “hands on” experience of project management. The young gardeners dealt with everything from the initial design stages, to sourcing suppliers, logistics and running their own team in order to complete the planting to a deadline. College training provides the theory but Aberdeen City Council felt that having such an opportunity as this scheme provides to actually oversee a project of their own would benefit the apprentices career development much more than simply talking about it.

tycom are delighted to have helped bring this project to fruition and at the recent Beautiful Scotland awards it was commented that the initiative was something that other councils should look at as a great example of business and local authority working together to achieve multiple benefits in the community.
