A leading IT services provider which started out selling typewriters is set to see its annual turnover hit £3.5million this year, as it celebrates its 30th birthday.
Since the 1970s, Aberdeen-based tycom has evolved to become one of Scotland's leading IT businesses, providing cutting edge services and solutions for clients in a diverse range of sectors throughout the UK and across the world, including Indonesia, Sicily, Egypt and Morocco.
As well as its headquarters on Aberdeen's Queens Road, tycom has expanded into the central belt, with offices set up in Dunfermline and Glasgow to help service its growing number of clients.
tycom currently supports more than 300 businesses from a wide range of sectors, including the oil and gas industry, which prompted the opening of an office in Houston, Texas.
Having developed software packages such as asset tracking, ideally suited to the oil industry, they recognised the need for a presence in Houston to properly target the US market.
tycom was also the first IT company in Scotland to offer a helpdesk support facility as part of ongoing contracts and its skilled team can create software packages tailored to suit the key business needs of clients.
The company originated in the 1940s as Typewriter Services and Equipment Aberdeen Ltd (Tyseal).
Founder Dennis John Williams retired in the late 1980s, selling Tyseal to a stock market company, but Tyseal Computers retained its independence and became Ty-com Business Systems Ltd.
Managing Director Alistair Findlater said the milestone anniversary was an exciting time.
"IT is a fast-moving, dynamic sector and we've have tried to constantly ensure we are at the forefront of all technological advances. We were the first IT company in Scotland to offer a helpdesk support facility as part of ongoing IT contracts and we must be doing something right as we have held some clients for nearly 30 years.".
"I am very proud of what we have achieved and I am excited about the fresh challenges that lie ahead as we continue to expand and grow." he said. "IT is always changing and evolving and as a company with 30 years experience, we have a head start on many other younger companies in the market today.".
Mr Findlater said they had turned over around £2.75million last year, which is expected to rise to £3.5million this year.
In addition to bespoke software designed for an individual organisation, they offer the probity® range, which includes financial accounting, construction, plant hire, oil and gas and payroll applications; Bureau Payroll; capability core®, which records staff training and certification history; and prosperity® CRM software, for accurate record keeping on all sales activity and prospecting of new customers.
