Leostream - Connection Broker solutions that meet your business needs
The promise of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is tremendous – simpler desktop provisioning and management, hardware independence, better data security and compliance, less down-time, the list goes on and on. While these benefits are compelling for nearly any organization serving end-users, what happens when your requirements go beyond the solutions offered by out-of-the-box virtualization vendors?
· Do you want to avoid being tied to one Virtualisation technology, in the same way you wanted to avoid being tied to one Hardware manufacturer?
· Do you need the flexibility and independence to create a hosted environment from vastly different systems?
· Do you want to deliver applications and sessions in addition to desktops?
· Do you require policies that can accurately implement your organization’s business rules?
As you move from a physical to virtual infrastructure to deliver end-user resources, the Leostream Connection Broker is a vendor-independent solution with unparalleled flexibility and scalability. Whether repurposing your existing network or integrating what you currently have while adding new elements, the Leostream Connection Broker results in a cost-effective, centrally managed, hosted infrastructure that can deliver all of your end-user resources while fully supporting future changes.
Business Solutions
Few organizations rely on a single technology to satisfy all of their employees’ needs. This is the case, for example, in a help desk scenario where support engineers need access to different types of operating systems, in order to manage customer support issues in the exact environment where they occurred. Turning a mixed deployment into a VDI solution challenges IT administrators to design a complex system that supports a number of remote viewer protocols. Organizations need to find a solution that matches the employees’ workflows and eases the administrative effort of setting up the system.
The Leostream Connection Broker supports a wide variety of clients, back-end operating systems, remote viewer protocols, and hypervisors, allowing organizations to build out their computing infrastructure to suit the needs of the end users.
Hypervisors
The Leostream Connection Broker has native support for virtual machines created in VMware® ESX and Citrix® XenServer™. In addition, by installing the Leostream Agent on the virtual machines, the Connection Broker can assign virtual machines created by any hypervisor including Microsoft® Hyper-V.
Clients
The Leostream Connection Broker integrates with a variety of thin clients. In addition, by installing Leostream Connect on a fat desktop or laptop, organizations can repurpose existing hardware running Linux and Windows operating systems to act as clients.
Back-end Operating Systems
The Leostream Connection Broker connects end users to both Linux and Windows machines, allowing end users to work with their operating system of choice. Administrators create pools of similar machines in the Connection Broker and use policies to assign machines from these pools to users. Policies can assign multiple desktops, including desktops with different operating systems

How does the Connection Broker work?
A connection broker lies at the heart of any virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) project. It's where all the Data-centre pieces are tied together, and all the decisions are made about who can access what and how. It's a complex function and can represent up to 40 percent of the effort for a VDI deployment.
Leostream has focused on connection broker solutions since hosted and virtualized desktops emerged, and provides a complete connection broker solution enabling organizations to make VDI a reality. The Leostream Connection Broker is a “best-in-class” broker that simply and securely connects end-users with hosted desktops, virtual desktops, applications, and other resources hosted in the data centre, enabling access whenever and wherever it is needed.

Supported Platforms
The Leostream Connect client enables organizations to turn existing fat desktops into clients managed by the Leostream Connection Broker. Leostream Connect installs on Linux® and 32- and 64-bit Microsoft® Windows® operating systems, including:
§ Windows NT®
§ Windows 2000
§ Windows XP
§ Windows Server® 2003
§ Windows Vista®
§ Windows Server 2008
§ Any x86 Linux operating systems running JRE 1.5 or above
To lock down existing fat clients and laptops, use Leostream's client-side single sign-on (SSO) while running Leostream Connect in shell mode. With this configuration, Leostream connects your users directly to their remote session. The local computing environment remains inaccessible.
Supported Thin Clients
Organizations can choose from a wide range of Connection Broker-compatible thin clients, including thin clients from the following vendors:
§ 10ZiG
§ Cranberry
§ Devon IT
§ HP - including native support for SAM clients
§ IGEL®
§ IRIS ICT
§ Praim®
§ Wyse®
Alternatively, organizations can create a Connection Broker-compatible client from any device running the Windows XP Embedded Operating System or x86 Linux operating systems running JRE 1.5 or above.
Web Interface
Users can access desktops from Microsoft Internet Explorer® or Mozilla Firefox® Web browsers. Web browsers launch connections using any of the following protocols:
- RDP
- Microsoft ActiveX® RDP
- VNC
- Juniper Networks® SSL VPN
Alternatively, organizations can use any third-party remote viewer that can be launched from a URL. The Leostream Connection Broker loads the remote viewer and signs the user into the remote desktop, without installing remote viewer software.
Remote Protocols
The Leostream Connection Broker supports desktop connections using the remote viewer protocol appropriate for the backend operating system, including:
- Microsoft RDP 5.0
- Microsoft RDP 6.0
- Citrix® ICA™
- Famatech Radmin®
- HP® RGS
- NoMachine NX
- rdesktop
- VNC, including UltraVNC, TightVNC, and RealVNC®
- Teradici™ PC-over-IP®
- Sun ALP
