Password Strength

If your password can be hacked in a year or less you should change it.  This means that the minimum length any of your passwords should be is 11 characters. We at Tycom use 12 characters as our minimum password length. We also insist on using at least 3 out of 4 of the character types:

  • Uppercase letters 
  • Lowercase letters
  • Numbers
  • Symbols

Passwords to access your system should also be supported by some form of Two Factor Authentication. This provides an extra layer of security. 

To ensure that the burden of remembering a password is not too onerous, the use of password management software is recommended. This ensures that a password can be stored securely for use when required. 

Implementing machine-generated passwords also ensures that users do not choose easily guessable passwords which makes it even more difficult for the hackers to crack.
